Equifax had a security breach.  Hackers obtained personal data on 400+Million people.  The possibility of identity theft, fraudulent credit cards, mortgages, etc.  is real. 

Annual Free Credit reports from Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian.  You should do all 3.  You can stagger throughout year or do them all at once.  The website is weird to navigate.  You request reports, then it takes you to their site to process.  You can print, save, or view report.  Then instead of closing out page,  there will be a “next report” button somewhere to link you back to free site and onto next agency.  There will be no need to enter credit card info. Equifax free monitoring if your data has been breached. : https://trustedidpremier.com/eligibility/eligibility.html You will either get a date to enroll or be sent to a fill in form for free credit monitoring by Equifax.  To Freeze credit report: https://www.freeze.equifax.com/Freeze/jsp/SFF_PersonalIDInfo.jsp You will get a confirm page with a PIN.  Record this PIN somewhere.  You will need it to remove freeze.

Once your credit reports are frozen, you will need to notify each agency to unfreeze your report.  This would happen if you were applying for credit cards, mortgages, other loans.  This means when you apply for these debt instruments, it will take a bit longer.

With the credit agency breach and the free searches online, hackers can get all the information on you to apply for credit cards, etc. The data collection sites list names of family connections, maiden names, etc.  Things you’d use to verify your identity.

Check https://haveibeenpwned.com to check emails and passwords. If your information has been taken, a list of sites will be displayed.  You should change passwords for any sites and/or delete your accounts if you don’t recognized site or use it any more.
